Start of my day 10.27.2008

When I left my house this morning, on my way to school, was Ammassalik Fjord like a mirror, quite calm...I like to have enough time, maybe talking with someone or just enjoying the view..

The river is frosen now...No water..the dogs are eating snow from now....

A loonly iceberg in the middel of the fjord....

I met a dog it had brooken the chain. If the owner don't find it and tie it again, the dog will be shot......

In my class we learn about banking today...Mathias and Emilie are the customers, Jokum is the bank clerk....

The Sledge Dog

Puppy ready for discovering the world...
The mother is still tied...When the puppies are a little older the mother is untied, to protect the puppies from other loose hungry dogs...

The Greenlandic sledge dog is very sturdy...And in the sledge dogs district you are not alowed to have other dog races to keep the race clean...In north east Greenland, in the old days, the sealers tied the she dog outside, to get the dog mated with a wolf...

The sealers often make a little shelter to the puppies.....

The East Greenlandic Dog Sledge

The Brake...used for braking dowhill.....
The East greenlandic dog sledge is higher and not so heavy as the West Greenlandic type...

Our sledge is made for driving in deeper snow
The sledge is made of ash wood it is strong and flexible and not so heavy as oak...

The upper part of the sledge is tied to the lower part with nylonline. To prevent the sledge from breaking in rough terrain...

This is a new sledge and the brake is not mounted yet....

The runners are mounted with white nylon...

Kulusuk Airport

Kulusuk Airport in the end of July
The airport in the end of March
This two photos gives an expression of the enormous amounts of snow, falling here in East Greenland....
The winter 2008 the airport was closed in a week, because it was imposible to get rid of the the snow masses....As you can see the snowheight is higher than the airplane...

Storm????

Ice in Ammassalik Fjord

Ice face... When the sun shines on the ice it gets beautiful colours...
This piece of ice is good for drinks...not that one, but smaller...It's very hard, it comes from the lovest part of the glacier...When it is melting small air bobbles comes out...The air is maybe hundreds of years old..... And it makes a funny noise in the glas...
Maybe an Eagel or a Lion????
Today I fell in my boat and hurt my right hand....I can'nt write so much......

Guests for Dinner

Winter is coming and there are more time for indoor activities..We had invited some friends for dinner Saturday evening...It is nice to prepare good dinner here in Kuummiut....I had to use my imagination, because the range of goods aren't very good....When we can buy vegitables in the KNI grocery shop is it nececery to buy them at once, because they didn't store them very well....If we have the vegitables in our house we can have fresh lemon, carrots, and Chinese cabbage for 2 or 3 months....
In this, the first course: With cooked Greenlandic Salmon, Greenlandic prawns and home grown Red pepper..I'll make a dressing of pear/banana yoghurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, tomato ketchup, a little Whorchester sauce and paprika..

On a layer of Chinese cabbage, served in sherbet glasses.....
Bon apetite
Home-made flutes
Ready to dine..............

Scecond course: Roasted Greenlandic lamb. And at last a rice desert with whisped cream and Raspberry Sauce....

At last: Coffea and homemaked Almond sticks.

Fuel for winter

Saturday morning the tankship arrived to Kuummiut....The big tank is now filled with gasoil, heating oil, and parafine for the coming winter...Next time we'll see it again will be next summer....The ship use to anker just beneath our house, but because of the strong wind from north west, it was made fast at the factory quay....And a long, very long pibeline fleeding on the sea, was sailed to the big tank in the setlement...
